FrontLine: CBAmerica Chaplains in Ministry

Winter 1996 - Volume 5, Issue 4

Jeremiah 29:11 'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' It has been exciting to personally experience this verse in my life this past year and then to se several of our chaplains have their lives redirected and be able to turn to this verse and see God's Word bring encouragement and healing to the lives of others.

This has been a good year of ministry for our chaplains and their families. There are a lot more names in the Book of Life as God gave the increase to the planting and watering from the lives and ministries of CBAmerica chaplains around the world. Praise God for His faithfulness and keep praying for His continued blessings as we serve Him joyfully.

The Wheaton offices have been getting a face lift with new carpet and fresh paint. We were glad we had 'laptop' computers and chairs to work for several days. Things are looking better now and we welcome you to stop by and visit when you are in town. Pray for the Chaplains Committee as we make recommendations and appointments of new chaplains during upcoming meetings.

Carol and I visited our chaplains and their families serving in Germany recently and had an encouraging trip. Part of the time was spent together for a retreat at Vilsek. We had a great time of fun, sharing, prayer and getting to know each other better. Pray for our chaplains and their families in Europe as they minister to dependents with family members deployed to Bosnia and other hot spots. Our chaplains and their families are being stretched to meet the tremendous needs of those they minister to. They need you to stand with them in prayer!

We received the good news that Mark Mitera, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Sunnyside, WA, was selected for active duty chaplaincy by the Army with a report date in early February. Pray for Mark and his wife Jean. Mark's first assignment will be an unaccompanied tour (hardship) to Korea for one year. Mark had five years prior service as an Air Force officer. Jean will remain in Sunnyside, WA, with their five children while Mark ministers to soldiers stationed in Korea. I know they will appreciate your prayers for their family. Pray for Mark as he adjusts to the military life as well as the separation from his family.

Bill and Elaine Cheyne retired from the Army in the fall of 1991 and they have remained in the Denver, CO, area. Bill enjoys working at the Denver Rescue Mission and does pulpit supply in Denver area churches. He teaches a Wednesday morning men's Bible study at their church. Elaine keeps busy in home health nursing. On a recent trip to England and Wales they had this picture taken at Stonehenge. Pray for the ongoing ministries of our retired chaplains. Many are busier in retirement then they were before they retired.

Praise! Dan and Linda Stephens are almost finished their tour witht he Navy in Japan. This summer they will return to St. Petersburg, Florida to serve a tour with the Coast Guard. They went to China and walked on the Great Wall to celebrate their 22nd anniversary. There is Joy in serving Jesus! Their ministry in Japan has not been limited to US military personnel. Many Japanese attend the chapel services and Dan recently baptized some of the new believers. Pray for the Stephens as they finish their ministry there and for their daughter Amy as she decides where to attend college this coming fall. Pray for Linda's mother who recently underwent surgery.

Dan and Linda Larson are with the Army in Schweinfurt, Germany where Dan is the Community Chaplain. Many of the soldiers in that area are deployed to Bosnia. Dan is busy overseeing the ministry to families and remaining soldiers. Dan has a number of Reserve chaplains working under his supervision as they fill in for chaplains deployed to Bosnia. Linda is involved in ladies ministries. They will be leaving Germany this summer to return to the US to another assignment. Pray for Dan and Linda as they minister to soldiers and dependents and as they await orders for their new assignment.

Brad and Susan West are in the process of leaving a fruitful ministry in Hanau, Germany with a Patriot Missile Battalin, to begin a new ministry at Ft. Hood, TX. I had the privilege to preach in Brad's chapel during our recent visit. Pray for the West's as they pack, move, find housing and schools, then get settled. Pray for Alex and Natalie as they say goodbye to friends in Germany and make new friends and adjust to new schools.

Dave and Rose Lundell have decided to leave the Army after 20+ years of military service. They will retire in July from Augsburg, Germany and they are seeking the Lord's direction in their lives for a ministry in evangelism and discipleship in a local church. Pray for the Lundells as they discover the right place of ministry. Dave is also seeking to begin a D.Min program as he pursues his passioin for evangelism. Let's Pray! Guy McBride will be looked at for selection to Active Duty in February. Pray for God's direction in his selection.

Chaplains still seeking placement in church ministries. Wylie Johnson, Ernie Williams, Nick Bell, and Evan Spencer. Praise for a safe return and sucessful training for Dean Bonura's unit during their recent exercise at the National Training Center. Don & Della Peterson as they look to retirement in May in the Tacoma, WA area. Additional financial support from churches for CBAmerica chaplaincy ministries. Pray for our hospital and nursing home chaplains as they minister to the elderly and hurting. Pray for those in the application process and for our committee as we work with these candidates. Pray for wisdom as I make travel plans for 1997 to visit chaplains, recruit, and share about chaplaincy in churches.
